Corporate Coaching

Corporate Coaching is the use of the co-active model to coach groups of individuals on workplace topics. In the business environment people generally have to work together as teams, in departments or other structures. In corporate coaching these groups are defined as a system and the system becomes the client. Within the system, there may be many voices however the system has to find its own collective voice. This technique promotes communication, airing of opinions and resolution of the systems “personality”.

A typical session would start with some discovery of the systems’ profile. This might include questions on business aspirations, goals, skills, knowledge, motivations, beliefs and perceived barriers. Once the system has identified itself, the coach goes on to look at the issues or “topics” that the system routinely faces. This can be at any level with examples being:

Board of Directors / Management Team

  • Planning / Budgeting
  • Stability / Order
  • Motivation / Inspiration
  • Aligning people
  • Establishing direction
  • Promotion of change
  • Control / Problem solving
  • Organisation / Staffing

Team concerned with Job Performance

  • Job satisfaction
  • Timeliness of project
  • Relationship with clients/ colleagues
  • Role and responsibilities
  • Team participationg
  • Communications
  • Being organised
  • Time management

Alternatively, the system can come up with its own set of topics.

The coach will ask the systems level of satisfaction with its performance in each of the topics identified. This then gives the coach a target topic for coaching on. Once a topic is agreed, the coach will use coaching principals and skills to deepen the systems learning of the topic or to move the system forward.

Using powerful questions the coach can uncover limiting beliefs or conflicts that the system has regarding the topic. Often the systems dissatisfaction with the topic is because the way it is currently handled steps on a deeply held value that the system holds. If the system is in a stuck place, the coach can shift this by doing perspective work, taking the system to alternate viewpoints or by looking at the topic through different pairs of glasses. Sometimes the system just needs to stop for a while and really assess what is going on in order to have clarity on what is holding it back and what is the best way to move it to action.
